Marvin Bell's Counterbalance reading showed convincingly why his writing has continually been praised for its lucidity. The Georgia Review praises him for "redefining poetry." Bell read at the Seattle Public Library on October 18, 2000. He has written 15 books of poetry, has won the Lamont Award, an American Academy of Arts and Letters Award, and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. He is the first and current Poet Laureate of Iowa, the Flannery O'Connor Professor of Letters at the University of Iowa, and a long-time member of the faculty of the Iowa Writers Workshop. Bell's latest publication is Nightworks: Poems 1962-2000 (Copper Canyon Press), a selection of poems from several previous books along with two dozen new poems.
