I've been a poet for thirty years," writes Simon J. Ortiz, "mainly trying to demystify language and enhance its meaning for me and readers and listeners."

Ortiz, who read his poetry on the University of Washington campus October 10, 2000, has written 19 books of poetry and prose. He is a member of Acoma Pueblo in New Mexico.

"Most of my work," he says, "focuses on issues, concerns and responsibilities we, as Native Americans, must have for our land, culture and community."

His most recent book of poems is From Sand Creek: Rising in This Heart Which is Our America (University of Arizona Press, 2000).

Seattle artist Paul Hunter created a beautiful 8 1/2" by 11" broadside of the Ortiz poem, "Pause: Yours: Ours," for the Seattle reading. Hunter carved a woodblock print and handset and handprinted the broadside. Click on picture on the left to see a larger image.
